RATING: B

To be honest, there actually *is* a plot to this episode. If you look deeper, there's a touching story on how the mutant's twin brother tries to use love to turn his sibling from his wicked ways. However, this is utterly ineffective, as the mutant gives his brother the finger and subsequently punches his heart out.

Personally, I thought that this was an amusing twist -- in most anime titles, the bad guy is *always* converted to the 'good side' by a kind act, but this particular series takes a much more realistic (and unromantic) point of view.

In any case, this hard-headed view is well complemented by the gritty post-cataclysmic setting. Although the graphics look like it was ripped from a certain video game (*cough* Fear Effect 2), I'm rather entranced by the stylish steam-punk designs and the well-animated fight sequences. This, combined with the snarky background music and the 16:9 display format, imbues this series with a sheen of post-modern urban hipness.

Unfortunately, nearly all this 'urban hipness' is erased by Meg's superb lines:

MEG: "It's totally freaky over here! Some heads got, like, squished . . . and Liang, like, went, splat . . . and fell backward, like, with a thud . . . and his head leaned forward . . ."

JO: What the hell are you saying?

MEG: Just come save me!

Um, yeah. I guess I need a few more episodes to make a proper 'hipness' judgment. But in the meantime, don't worry -- it's all good (^_^)
