Full Metal Alchemist 27April 15, 2004Title: Teacher Alphonse and Elric finally meet Izumi, their old alchemy teacher. Izumi is not happy.
After getting pummeled, Alphonse, Elric and Winry go with Izumi to her home in Dublith.
At Dublith, Edward and Alphonse tell Izumi that they attempted to bring their mother back to life by using forbidden alchemy techniques. Izumi thrashes the two brothers, but gives them a hug afterwards.
The End * * * RATING: C Hmm. Well, quite honestly, I thought that this was a mediocre episode -- after all, just like Stripey says, FMA 27 consisted mostly of flashbacks, death and violence. If you try, I guess you can see Izumi as a sort of 'mother' figure -- although she's quite strict, she *does* take good care of the Elric brothers (i.e. gives them a hug, puts bandages on them as children). Additionally, she's a superb alchemist (even managing to do Edward's one-handed trick) and seems to have prior experience with human transmutation. I suppose that we'll learn more about Izumi's dark past in the future, but, judging from her reactions in this episode, I'm seriously betting that Izumi lost a child in the past. In any case, this episode represents the *first* time that Edward willingly takes a beating from anyone. In the past, Edward hasn't been afraid to challenge stronger villains (Envy), better alchemists (Scar), and higher-ranked officials (Colonel Mustang), so, it's rather odd to see Edward receive so much punishment without challenging it. I'm not sure whether this is a sign of Edward being more mature (*cough* compare with typical reaction to 'shorty' jokes), but still, this bears well for character development issues. Anyway, aside from all that, it's rather nice to have a fairly calm episode. I'm still not getting used to the wretched EP, but I suppose that this too shall pass (^_^) * * * disagree? read 14 comments! * * * Related Reviews
