RATING: B

Following in the footsteps of previous episodes, this chapter is utterly devoid of either action or romance. However, the resultant focus on plot and character development is so inimitably pure . . . so absurdly concentrated that it takes storyline immersion to a completely new level.

Just as pointed out in BluWacky's excellent review, there's an massive thunderstorm brewing within this series -- at the center, the two most powerful characters (the Count & Morcef) are clearly drawing their weapons, and drawn in their wake, a sense of malaise disturbs the ennui of both Albert and Eugenie. If anything, this series does a superb job of conveying the sheer enormity of the intrigue here, and between mention of supernatural powers and measureless spaceborne riches, one can't help but wonder how the inevitable confrontation will turn out.

Without a doubt, all this grandeur would be useless without graphical polish, but quite fortunately, Gankutsuou excels in this regard. As seen in prior episodes, this title uses plenty of mesmerizing optical illusions to convey a sense of vastness, but in addition to this, it's quite amazing to see the depth of attention given to tiny details, such as the accurate French wording within the Count's invitation.

When all is said and done, Gankutsuou is definitely the *most* intellectually challenging title of this season. While most shonen/shoujo viewers would be better served by more traditional offerings, this series delivers a rush that is totally out of this world.
