Madlax 1April 13, 2004Title: Gun Dance In the jungles of Latin America, a rebel leader gives a disk to his son Pete.
Soon after, an elite warrior called Madlax comes to get the disk.
Madlax dons a nightgown and beats the crap out of everyone.
Pete dies. The End. * * * RATING: D On the surface, this series seems remarkably similar to Phantom OAV. After all, the protagonist of this series is *also* a beautiful assassin working for a powerful corporate organization. However, once one looks past these superficial similarities, it soon becomes clear that Madlax lacks the presentation and deep inner-story of Phantom. Instead of presenting a compelling "search-for-truth" or "seek-revenge" lief-motif, Madlax merely illustrates the one-sided mentality of a jaded mercenary. This flat presentation deprives the viewer of a good story to focus on, and necessarily diverts attention to the less-polished aspects of this title (i.e. for heaven's sake, why does Madlax wield a nightgown to annihilate an enemy camp in the middle of a sweltering jungle?) Although I think that the idea of a elite assassin is cool (and always gives rise to neat Matrix-esque scenes), the thematic framework for this series is simply too vague to be compelling. If this series wasn't offered in the same season as Phantom, it might have stood a chance, but as it stands, I guess I'll catch it later . . . * * * disagree? read 14 comments! |
