Naruto 72February 27, 2004Title: Hokage's Mistake! The True Face Under the Mask. Ok, in the last episode, Sasuke finally caught up with the evil but wounded Gaara, as well as his companions, Kankuro and Temari. Temari tells Kankuro to carry Gaara away, and decides to fight Sasuke herself.
However, as expected, Temari is no match for Sasuke, and he quickly defeats her by using a bomb-laden decoy replication (i.e. Temari attacks decoy in close combat, decoy blows up, Temari is defeated). Meanwhile, back in the Chunin arena, our Hokage is preparing to use a secret jutsu against Orochimaru and his two undead guardians. Before he uses this technique, we get a retrospective look on how this whole rivalry was started. It turned out that many years ago, Orochimaru was one of the Hokage's exclusive students. Although the Hokage recognized that Orochimaru was a once-in-a-century genius with phenomenal potential, he also recognized that Orochimaru was driven by ill will and ambition from an early age.
Later on, Orochimaru eventually became a Konoha instructor, even donning the head protector (see below), but instead of protecting his village, he murdered fellow ninjas in order to conduct research on immortality.
Although the Hokage banished Orochimaru for his crimes, it seems that Orochimaru successfully completed his work in exile, and can theoretically live forever by possessing young individuals. Our Hokage decides to end Orochimaru's life before he can destroy Konoha and possess his next victim (Sasuke), so, he engages the forbidden technique Fuuin-Jutsu Shiki-Fujin (God of Sealing Death). The End * * * RATING: B Hmmm -- let's see. What other anime series has someone sacrificing human lives in order to search for everlasting life? Could it be . . . Full Metal Alchemist? Of course not, the Philosopher's Stone has nothing to do with immortality (^_^). Stupid deja vu issues aside, this was a superb episode, with tons of humor, nostalgia, and cool fight scenes. Anyway, the only real quibble I had with this episode is the matter of Orochimaru's immortality, since it seems that Orochimaru only has a Voldemort-like ability to possess the bodies of young people, instead of gaining eternal youth and keeping his own body (which seems like the fair way to maintain immortality). Aside from that issue, this episode is packed with action, suspense, and plot development, so, download it pronto! * * * * * * Related Reviews
