Naruto 82May 10, 2004Title: Sharingan vs. Sharingan!! Kakashi-sensei fights Uchiha Itachi. However, Itachi uses an illusionary technique to crucify and torture Kakashi.
After being tortured, Kakashi realizes that Itachi came to Konoha in order to capture Naruto, who has a powerful demon sealed within his body (Kyuubi the nine-tailed fox).
After Kakashi reveals this, Itachi's teammate tries to kill Kakashi, but he is stopped by a kick in the face from Gai.
The End * * * RATING: B Ok, it's acceptable to beat up Naruto or even the Third Hokage in the interest of plot development, but absolutely no-one has the right to touch Kakash-sensei! Grr. This particular episode was actually painful to watch -- this isn't in a bad way, of course, but simply reflects the sheer emotional intensity within this series. Although I'll admit that it was wrenching to see Kakashi being repeatedly stabbed by Itachi, it was even more startling to see Kakashi's traditional nonchalance and aplomb being replaced by pain and fear. To my knowledge, this is the *first* time that Kakashi has been out-classed, and clearly, when the producers want to drive this point home, they do so with a vengeance. Having said that, it's rather interesting to witness the sheer power of Itachi's mange-sharingan ("sharingan of 1,000 blurs"). I mean, Kakashi is a special jounin, with quite a few S-rank missions under his belt, but still, Itachi destroys him with a single technique. Even though the Orochimaru/Hokage battles occurred just a few episodes ago, we've *never* been introduced to people who possess this level of strength. Without a doubt, Itachi and his whole "Akatsuki organization" are operating at an unprecedented level. As we ramp up to this new stage, there's a lot of stuff that is inexplicable (i.e. "Why couldn't Kakashi break out of Itachi's genjutsu by biting his lip like Kurenai did?"), but still, I'm really amped about see how things follow through. Will the Akatsuki organization try to get Naruto again? Will Sasuke ever meet his brother? Will Jiraiya be Naruto's permanent teacher instead of Kakashi?
