Read or Die 20February 21, 2004Title: Hello Sadness The new fighter featured in this episode is the 10-year old Anita King, who uses a combination of flying kicks and paper-based attacks to defeat a squad of enemy agents.
It seems that companions of these agents have stolen Anita's two sisters, so Anita and our bespectacled protagonist uses their powers to create a huge paper airplane.
After creating the airplane, the two track down the helicopter holding the Anita's sisters. Unfortunately, just as our heroes reach the helicopter, it explodes, presumably killing all its passengers. It seems that this explosion was plotted by an evil British mastermind, who is apparently now one step to his plans of world domination.
The End. * * * RATING: D In retrospect, this really wasn't that bad of an episode -- the whole idea of using paper as a weapon is quite creative, and rather reminiscent of the manner in which Gambit uses his playing cards. Although the "evil-but-suave-British-kingpin" is a bit cliche (*cough* James Bond *cough*), and it's rather inconcievable why the minions don't use flamethrowers (which would traditionally work well again paper and wind), it was still interesting to see a huge paper airplane held in place purely by the force of one's will. Although this series definately gets high marks for creativity and has a strong cast of characters, it is underminded by totally unwarranted (and poorly-drawn) fanservice in the opening sequences. Given that this short (~60 second) clip alienates much of the intended audience, it's pitiable to see how such a worthy title can be singlehandedly damned by poor design choices. * * * disagree? read 2 comments! |
