RATING: B

Just as Jeff, Tsumoi, and Kabitzin mention, this series does a fabulous job of mixing killer action scenes, wicked character designs and a gorgeous setting into one smooth jambalaya of shonen goodness.

Quite personally, this is currently my favorite title of this season -- in a happy turn of events, the storyline is turning out to be quite well-developed, and, in blatant homage to the Matrix, the midair arrow-dodging contortions of our hero (see 400k GIF animation) just proves how high the production values are.

Although the original "Seven Samurai" didn't have mecha, this new interpretation presents an interesting dichotomy between the human swordsmen and their mechanized counterparts. Although some of the mecha in this series are apparently guileless (*cough* big dumb Kikuchiyo), there's an ominous vibe coming from the previously-human samurai (No-Buseri) and the mysterious 'Guardian' robots of the imperial court.

When you add an oligarchic class structure to this mix ("You are a merchant! She is a farmer!"), it's clear that Samurai 7 has plenty of potential for unrequited love and forbidden social taboos. Will Kikuchiyo eventually end up getting some hot mecha-on-mecha action with an evil No-buseri?!

Deferences to Koi Kaze aside, this series is definitely on the right track -- Gonzo's done an excellent job so far, and, judging from the previews, the next episode looks even better (^_^)
