RATING: B

Looking back at the recent spate of excellent Champloo episodes, it's hard to imagine that this series ever dipped from its superlative first episode.

While this series currently exudes just as much style as it started with, the title also adds a sense of poignancy engendered by the close relationship between Mugen, Fuu, and Jin. While our two samurai protagonists first started as bitter rivals, it's clear that Mugen and Jin actually care about other, not only as competitors used to test one's skills, but also as companions willing to defend the other against adversaries.

A prime example of this can be seen in Jin's act of going forth and claiming revenge for the assumed death of Mugen. This act starkly parallels Mugen's helping hand at the end of episode 11, and serves to establish the strong camaraderie shared by our three heroes.

In any case, it seems that this series is doing an excellent job of developing a strong group dynamic. It would definitely be a shame if this title ended now (as purported during the opening credit screen), since Samurai Champloo is, without a doubt, one of the best titles of the year.
