Samurai Champloo 2June 9, 2004Title: Redeye Reprisal A murderer is mad that Mugen cut his hand off.
So he hires a sythe-wielding hulk to fight Mugen.
And hires an assassin to kill Jin.
Fortunately, Mugen and Jin escape unscathed. The End * * * RATING: B For the most part, this episode didn't really feature character or plot development -- Jin and Mugen are mysterious as ever, Fuu didn't reveal anything about the missing "sunflower-smelling" samurai, and the revenge-seeking murderer was killed by his own From the beginning, it's clear that Champloo's strength is in its gorgeous fight sequences. At a first glance, Champloo seems comparable to Jubei-Chan 2 (screencaps from Stripey). but, when one looks closer, the sheer polish of Champloo's choreography distinguishes itself. As Kabitzin pointed out, Mugen's capoeira-esque fighting style is simply astounding (especially when he fights a huge opponent in this episode), and it is well complemented by Jin's textbook-precise moves. In any case, suffice it to say that the combat scenes seems to be on par with something straight out of the legendary Soul Calibur -- all characters actively hold defensive/offensive stances while moving, and if you watch the scenes frame-by-frame, it's possible to notice an amazing amount of detail not only in sword fights themselves, but also in the way that the individuals brace themselves physically by positioning their hips and feet. Without a doubt, an immense amount of care has been bestowed on this series. I guess the main question right now is how Champaloo's storyline will turn out. It's still only the second episode, so it's a bit early to jump to any conclusions, but I wouldn't be surprised to see this series grow into something extraordinary. * * * disagree? read 8 comments! * * * Related Reviews
