RATING: B

While this particular episode didn't have much action, it showed a surprising amount of character development with regards to Fuu. Although Fuu traditionally shows an high penchant for getting captured, this episode uses this characteristic to Fuu's advantage and shows her making friends not only with the thief's mother, but also with the thief himself. However, this friendship is bittersweet, and soon after Fuu befriends the thief, he is killed by the village authorities.

Without a doubt, Champloo does an excellent job of sketching out its transient characters -- with regards to the thief in this episode, we learn about his family, his doctor, and his friend in the gambling house. The sheer depth of character description was also seen in the last episode, where we similarly learn a great deal about the Dutchman and his reason for coming to Japan. While this is well and good, one wishes that Champloo could pay similar detail to Mugen and Jin.

Truth be said, we know nearly nothing about our two main samurai. Both are excellent fighters and it is rumored that Jin killed his dojo master, but aside from that, both protagonists are wholly enigmatic. It's a shame that other transient characters (i.e. thief, Dutchman) are given much more screen time and character development than Mugen and Jin, since they both seem quite interesting and are voiced by excellent seiyuus. Nevertheless, it's possible that this will change in upcoming episodes.

In any case, from Momotato's screencaps, it looks like the later episodes will have wicked shonen-esque battle. Champloo's battles are always quite visually impressive, so it's definitely a treat to look forward to (^_^)
