Samurai Champloo 9August 16, 2004Title: Beatbox Bandits A group of monks are planning a revolution.
However, Mugen burns their fields of hallucinogenic drugs . . .
and makes friends in the ensuing haze.
The End * * * RATING: B Truth be said, this was an excellent chapter, with plenty of action and humor reminiscent of the stellar first episode. Although we haven't seen Mugen in battle for quite a while, it's clear that he retains his wicked swordsmanship, not to mention a disturbing willingness to take on an entire village head-on. With regards to plot development, just as Kabitzin's insightful review pointed out, we are no closer to the sunflower samurai than we once were. Even so, it's rather nice to see Champloo return to its original roots. Just as a first pass, it was pretty keen to see the infamous video 'scratch' effects back, not to mention a narrowly-avoided execution of two main characters. In any case, it's clear that Champloo's storied production house *can* deliver an excellent episode when they want to. It'll be interesting to see whether this level of polish will remain constant, but, at least for now, my hopes are high (^_^) * * * disagree? read 15 comments! * * * Related Reviews
