RATING: B

Without a doubt, this season of anime is awesome -- we've got Kenran with underwater-mecha action, Bakarestu Tenshi with skanky-mecha action, and now . . . Tristia with child-genius-mecha action! I mean, could you *ask* for better programming?

Aside from the content, the production values for this OAV are top-notch -- as you can see from the screencaps, the colors are quite vivid and make for great eye-candy. The only other series that has such vibrant graphics is Maburaho (see pictures from Stripey), but I'd say that this series is a bit better, just because all the gorgeous ocean shots. Clearly, when they say "Tristia of the Deep Blue Sea", they aren't joking.

In any case, the only downside to this episode is its near-total lack of plot. This isn't totally bad, since it accentuates the contrasting protagonist idiosyncrasies (i.e. Nanoka in genius mode, rival in inferiority-complex mode). Although I'm getting severe Digi Charat vibes from the 'battling-idol' character interactions, I'm not complaining at all. The next episode seems to be a continuation of the mecha battles, so, I guess we just have to get ready to cheer on Dejiko Shipon Nanoka! :p
