Grossest SciFi Ever

August 2, 2005

omg my eyes my eyes they burn

Mad kudoes to S. for sending this to me, but Harlan Ellison's short story I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream is the most disgusting piece of literature I've read this entire year. It's brilliantly written, and quite short too, so, with that disclaimer, it's really worth a read. Here's the first paragraph:

Limp, the body of Gorrister hung from the pink palette; unsupported -- hanging high above us in the computer chamber; and it did not shiver in the chill, oily breeze that blew eternally through the main cavern. The body hung head down, attached to the underside of the palette by the sole of its right foot. It had been drained of blood through a precise incision made from ear to ear under the lantern jaw. There was no blood on the reflective surface of the metal floor.

Anyway, excellent stuff -- I haven't read science fiction in ages, but it's really easy to get sucked back into the genre, given that SciFi.com has an archive of classic short stories that are all succinct, but pack a vicious punch.

PS: Also recommend Gahan Wilson's The Sea Was Wet as Wet Can Be -- downright creepy if you've read Lewis Carrol. The epilogue is pure gold:

If it hadn't been for brave, stolid Alice (bless her stout, young, British heart), herself a child, I don't think I could have survived those goddamn books.

But there is no Alice in this story.
