V for Vendetta

March 24, 2006

The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose vis-a-vis an introduction, and so it is my very good honor to meet you and you may call me V.

Went to see V for Vendetta again with dormmate R., and ended up staying up until two in the morning talking about the film. Questions of style and hokum aside, it remains a stimulating movie, and raises some vicious ethical conundrums [anarchy vs. fascism?], which is a Good Thing in my book. Anyway, had quite a lot of fun going through various commentaries online -- here's a rather amusing review from the BBC:

Director James McTeigue rarely frames V with any imagination and his scenes, which need to bristle with emotion and wit, are static (it's pretty much a voiceover gig for Hugo Weaving, The Matrix's Agent Smith). You're hard-pressed to give a damn about the man, while the majority of Portman's energy is devoted to wrestling with an English accent (she loses). [Rating 2/5]

In any case, R. ordered a copy of the comic by Alan Moore/David Lloyd, and it'll be interesting to see if the source material delves deeper into the moral & ethical constructs of the movie. We shall see!
