New Gaming Computer

May 28, 2005

The saga begins! Rampant lusting for Cray XP70 = bad.

Whoa, the last few days have been ultra-busy, especially juggling last week's NIH conference and research stuff. Anyway, in more pertinent news, I just purchased components for a new gaming machine! This is actually my first build, but I had a ton of help from blood-brother Kungfucius, who is the awesomest person ever ^_^

First off, here are the parts I ordered:

PROCESSOR - AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 939 pin
MOTHERBOARD - Asus A8N-E Socket 939
OS - Windows XP Professional x64 Edition
FIREWIRE - Syba SD-PCI-4F
MEMORY - Corsair 1GB (2 x 512MB) PC3200
CASE - Antec P160(Aluminum)
POWER - Antec SmartPower 2.0 500W
VIDEO CARD - eVGA GeForce 6600GT

The grand total for all of this (with shipping) is $629, which is quite good -- I'll be migrating my old DVD burner, PATA hard drives, and HDTV monitor, so all said, I'm happy at the way things turned out. Just as a quick fyi, the following sites were quite useful in finding computer-part deals (ranked by usefulness)

  1. AnandTech 'Hot Deals' Forum [Excellent]
  2. TechBargains
  3. FiringSquad Deals
  4. SlickDeals
  5. CheapStingyBastard

In any case, besides all the computer's inconsequential technical details, the *real* question is at hand is . . . what shall I christen it? Kabitzin has me edging towards Kawachi or Sirius, but I need a name that reeks of angst and bile.
